Experienced Civil Construction Estimator

Alvarez & Shaw, Inc. is seeking an experienced Civil Construction Estimator to join our team.

We are a Southern California civil construction contractor specializing in concrete and public infrastructure work, including curb and gutter, sidewalk, flatwork, structural concrete, site improvements, and related heavy civil construction.

We are looking for an estimator who can independently identify opportunities, review plans and specifications, perform accurate takeoffs, develop competitive estimates, and carry a bid from initial review through submission.

Responsibilities

  • Review plans, specifications, addenda, and bid documents

  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs

  • Prepare labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and production-cost estimates

  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing

  • Develop complete bid proposals and scopes of work

  • Identify exclusions, qualifications, risks, and potential scope gaps

  • Understand prevailing-wage, union, PLA, and public works requirements

  • Review project schedules, phasing, access, and site conditions when developing estimates

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and job walks as needed

  • Maintain organized bid files and estimating documentation

  • Track bid results and assist with follow-up

  • Work closely with ownership, project management, and field personnel to ensure estimates reflect actual production and jobsite conditions

  • Help identify and pursue new bidding opportunities with public agencies and general contractors

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of civil construction estimating experience preferred

  • Strong background in heavy civil, concrete, sitework, or public works construction

  • Experience reading civil plans and specifications

  • Strong knowledge of construction means, methods, labor, equipment, and production rates

  • Experience preparing detailed takeoffs and cost estimates

  • Familiarity with California prevailing-wage/public works projects strongly preferred

  • Experience with Caltrans, municipal, county, federal, or other government projects is a plus

  • Understanding of union and PLA projects is a plus

  • Strong computer and estimating software skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of the estimating process

We aren't looking for someone who simply puts numbers into a spreadsheet. We want an experienced estimator who understands how civil work is actually built in the field and can recognize the details that make the difference between a good job and a bad estimate.

The right person will be proactive, organized, dependable, and comfortable helping us identify and pursue the right opportunities, not just estimating the bids placed in front of them.
